As he has his 18-month checkup coming up next month, we’ll have a better idea about his percentiles then…can you believe he just hit 17 months old??? We sure can’t!...but for now, I just wanted to put up a “snapshot” of him at this age….so maybe a year from now we can update it to see how he’s changed….who knows, maybe he’ll be President one day and will have to write his autobiography…everyone will want to know what his favorite food was when he was 17 months old, right?
Without further ado…
Name: Landon Ryan Burgess
Age: 17 months
Weight: 32 lbs (as of early last week)
Height: Not sure. He’s pretty tall, but we haven’t measured his height in a while and it’s really hard to get him to sit still long enough to do it…I’m 6’3” and his head is above my knee, so do the math.
Eye Color: Remains to be seen. It actually really depends on what he wears. They are definitely a hazel sort of gray color, but when he wears blue they look have a steel bluish gray look, when he wears green, they look green and gray, and when he wears anything else, they look hazel and gray with the slightest steel blue in the middle. Whatever color we end up deciding on, they are pretty darn cool and we hope they stay like that and are pretty sure they will as he's well past that eye changing stage.
Hair Color: Sandy Brown with hints of red in the sun and thin in the front. As you can see by the pics, his hair is really coming in slowly in the front (especially on the sides). I constantly joke about how his hair is coming in the exact opposite of how my hair is going out…it’s a sad but true fact that Landon’s genes (when it comes to his hair as he gets older) are definitely working against him.
Vocabulary: New words include: “Yellow” (which comes out “ye-yow”), “Rabbit” (which he uses when he points to a rabbit, as well as the sound that a frog makes…it’s pretty close to “ribbit”), and “Mermaid” (which is his name for Mary when he looks through his picture version of the bible). He is also getting very good at making animal noises (with “RAAAAR” for the Lion/Tiger being one of our favorites)…he also makes the funniest noise when he tries to imitate a horse…I posted a video below that shows Landon making some of these noises...I will forewarn you that this is a long video (about 5 minutes or so), but pretty funny. He is to the point now where he gets very frustrated with us when he uses a word but we can’t understand him…but it is nice because it’s almost like having a normal conversation with someone. Most of the time we can tell that he understands us, and when he can’t, he gets this confused scowl look on his face and makes the “huh?” sound.
Physical Activities: He is a rumbling, stumbling, crazy kid that loves to move a hundred miles an hour! He climbs on everything that he can (some of his favorites are the dishwasher, toilet/bathroom area, and dining table). He is also partial to playing out in the backyard, throwing dirt, sucking on dirty rocks, and laying on top of the dogs…in short, he’s a little boy! I have recently started showing him how to swing a golf club, and he seems mildly interested and he’s been able to slam dunk a basketball in his hoop for ages...one interesting fact is that he still throws with both hands. We honestly can’t tell if he’s going to be right or left-handed yet, as he seems content using either (this goes for eating as well).
One other thing I wanted to mention here is that Landon has lately decided that he is too big to ride in his (really nice, really expensive) walking stroller. He now feels that he is old enough to walk the entire way and will proceed to scream his freaking head off all the way through the neighborhood until he gets his way. We typically walk anywhere from 1-2 miles a night, and it usually takes us about 30 minutes to do so. With Landon walking we can easily double that time, if not triple it! He likes to stop every few feet and literally “smell the roses”, pick up rocks, go touch cars (we only let him touch the non-moving variety), and dance. It is pretty funny, but when we’re on a tight schedule before bath time, I admit that I can get a little flustered with him…needless to say, Michaela is very patient with him and we always end up finding our way home.

Eating: As you can see, the kid is a tank and we have been very fortunate that Landon is such a good eater. Some of our friends really struggle with their kids to eat anything and actually have to give them the same things every night. Luckily for us, we haven’t found many foods that Landon won’t eat yet (knock on wood). Some of his favorites right now include: green beans, bananas, broccoli, peas, carrots, cheese, yogurt, chicken (any kind), pizza, anything that he can dip in ranch (especially French fries and croutons), and of course spaghetti. The one thing that he hasn’t grown a taste for yet is chocolate. We have offered him chocolate cake, cookies, etc…and he usually shakes his head and shrugs it off. His Aunt Nicole would be so disappointed in him!
Sleeping: This has been a touchy subject for us since he was born, as he really didn’t like being in his crib, and we ended up caving and co-sleeping with him in our bed for a very long time. But we converted his crib to a big-boy bed about a month ago, and it has been pretty smooth sailing ever since. Most nights he will wake up once, where he’ll crawl out of bed and come down the hall to see us (which is much nicer than being woken up by a crying baby). However, some nights we get lucky and he’ll sleep all the way through the night without making a peep. It really is a cute sight in the mornings when he wakes up and comes out to the living room rubbing his eyes and ready to start the day.

Toys: Other than the sports stuff mentioned above, Landon loves animals more than anything. Right now he’s very fascinated with farm animals, with cows and horses seeming to be at the top of his list of favorites. He has quite a few toy animals, but you can usually find him carrying around a horse or a cow. He also loves his stuffed-animal Mickey Mouse and Sandy the Penguin (from Sea World). His favorite shows to watch right now are the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and the Baby Einstein Animal video. Both are very short (around 20 minutes), and he likes to sit and watch while he eats his snacks.
Friends: While there are way too many at daycare to list, his buddy Anthony and him seem to be inseparable all day while they are at school. The teachers are always laughing about how close they are, and we can tell how happy they are to see each other every day when we arrive. Landon has also really enjoyed playdates with his friend Nicholas and many other kids within our group of family and friends as well.
I think that’s it for now. It was probably way more information than you ever wanted to know about Landon, but if you managed to read all the way through it…I salute you!
Have a great weekend.
